Summer Slippers
The summer slippers were an answer to the question “what do we sell when it’s hot?”. Having a product with wool lining is great during the cold season, but it can be a challenging thing to sell when it gets warmer. Most people don’t buy slippers in July, so I had an idea: Let’s make something just as comfortable as our winter model, but design it around the concept of a breezy, aerated piece that could be worn in the sun. I was never a sandals guy, so this fit in with my taste, for sure. I wanted the product to look like it had the air flow of a Porsche going 100mph with the windows down. The skeleton of the upper was premium leather, but the paneling was made of mesh with a small amount of stretch for comfort. We used a pigskin for the lining to combat the heat. It worked perfectly. The toes felt secure, cradled in the brilliant mesh, while the interior was supple and frictionless. Visually, I wanted the interior to look like a “cathedral of air.” Because light could shine through the mesh, I got some great shots from the inside of the slippers. Not something you see every day from footwear advertising, but it worked for the summer slippers. People loved them and we sold out in a few weeks.
